Ready or Not

Introduction

The first thing I noticed when I played Ready or Not was just how quickly a manageable room could turn into a total disaster. You can look at a doorframe for several seconds, prepare your team, plan your entry, and one sudden movement from an unexpected direction can throw your entire plan into chaos.

That’s what makes it different from an ordinary run-and-gun shooter. Patience. Communication.

What Ready or Not Offers PC Players

Ready or Not is a tactical first-person shooter from VOID Interactive, built around contemporary SWAT missions set in the made-up city of Los Sueos. Rather than throwing you into combat missions similar to traditional military shooters, this game places you in tense police scenarios where you’ll need to quickly respond to dangerous suspects, rescue hostage civilians, secure locations, and get a handle on chaotic situations.

It’s all about deliberate movement and decision-making.

You can tackle the story missions single-player with AI teammates, or cooperate with friends. The environments are made up of a mix of small-to-medium-sized interior spaces-each with its own unique layout and hazards-and larger exterior facilities to clear. Every environment is different, but they all require the same patient room-clearing approach.

Alongside this single-player gameplay, the game has an active modding community, with players able to customize gameplay elements to suit themselves.

The recent major update introduces the Mission Editor, allowing players to not just replay missions but to actually modify certain gameplay elements and non-player characters to generate a huge variety of new mission scenarios.

That makes for an unexpectedly experimental component.

How the Tactical Gameplay Plays Out

Ready or Not rewards careful thoughtful gameplay. Brashly rushing into an open doorway or down a corridor can quickly lead to a failed mission, but proper players think and plan ahead.

Whether you’re playing in single-player or online with friends, the game encourages a methodical approach. You have access to a variety of firearms, tactical gear, and less-lethal tools, giving you a range of options for approaching a variety of situations. You’re not always expected to neutralize every threat-sometimes situations call for better understanding and better decisions instead.

Having the ability to divide your team and work in loosely coordinated groups, communicating and covering different angles, is often the best approach during co-op gameplay sessions. And the AI can keep you on your toes with unpredictable suspect or civilian reactions, forcing you to adapt to every situation.

And that keeps things fresh in the long run.

An environment feels different depending on what challenges you face and what equipment you bring, which makes repeating a mission more interesting. Even with everything the game throws at you, a familiar location won’t feel like another run-through.

The Mission Editor allows you to go much further in this regard by giving you the ability to alter specific elements of any existing missions-including non-player character behaviors-so that you can generate a lot of new experiences without needing to wait for the developers.

How This Title Is Unique

The main positive aspect of Ready or Not is the way it makes even simple actions have an element of decision. Opening a door isn’t just a quick animation between rooms-there’s a weight in what it could be holding, where you should be positioning your team, what tool is appropriate, and how quickly an entire scenario could turn into chaos. And that’s the key.

The game encourages cautious gameplay rather than constant agitation. A satisfying mission experience is one where you avoid unnecessary chaos, communicate effectively, and handle every decision with poise.

Adding friends to the mix only enhances this aspect. An ordered team can split responsibilities and execute every entry with surprising professionalism, while an ineffective squad can turn a seemingly simple hallway into a slaughterhouse within seconds. To be honest, that’s the fun of it.

Different location settings also contribute to the gameplay experience, forcing you to adjust your approach to different environments with various obstacles and hazards-such as narrower corridors, more rooms to clear, staircases, open environments, and so on. The Mission Editor also enables experienced users to modify these settings by changing the behavior of non-player characters to create fresh scenarios that feel quite different from the base content.

The game’s ongoing DLC releases further extend the variety of environments and scenarios available to players, introducing extra weapons, gear, non-player characters, and challenges.

Summary

This isn’t a game about running around as fast as possible. It’s a game about tactically moving and thinking together as a unit. It seems straightforward. It isn’t. Going through a doorway can be an intensely stressful experience, as you don’t know exactly what it’s going to contain, where your teammates are, which tools you should bring, or how quickly everything can turn to chaos. And that’s the stuff that keeps it interesting, even after you know the core mechanics.
